يشتكي الكثيرون من رائحة الأنفاس الكريهة عند الاستيقاظ في الصباح، على الرغم من تنظيف الأسنان بمعاجين الأسنان المختلفة وتنظيف الفم بالمعقمات قبل النوم.

وخلال النهار، لا تشكل هذه المواد مشكلة، لأن الفم ينتج كمية كافية من اللعاب لقتل البكتيريا ومنع تشكل الرائحة الكريهة، أما أثناء النوم، فيتوقف الفم عن إنتاج اللعاب، سامحاً للبكتيريا بالتكاثر والعبث داخل الفم مسببة الرائحة الكريهة.
الحقيقة المزعجة أنه لا يمكن فعل الكثير لمنع تشكل رائحة الفم الكريهة عند الاستيقاظ في الصباح، وما يمكن فعله فقط هو الإكثار من تناول المياه، وتنظيف الأسنان بانتظام، والحرص على تنظيف اللسان أيضاً وخاصة عند الصباح، للتخلص من بقايا الطعام والبكتيريا الضارة.
