تم الكشف عن العلاقة بين فيتامين 'د'وسرطان القولون لأول مرة عام 1980 في الولايات المتحدة، عندما أظهرت دراسات ارتباط زيادة معدل الوفيات بهذا النوع من الأورام في شمال شرق أميركا أكثر من معدلاتها في الجنوب الغربي، وعزت النتائج السبب إلى وفرة التعرض للأشعة فوق البنفسجية والتي تزود الجسم بفيتامين 'د'. يحدّ هذا الفيتامين من نمو الأورام في القولون عن طريق الحد من تزويد الورم بالدم، وحماية سطح القولون والحفاظ عليه سليماً. كذلك يلعب الفيتامين دوراً في امتصاص الكالسيوم، والحد من انتشار الخلايا السرطانية.
تأثير الكالسيوم
أظهرت دراسات أميركية نشرت عام 1999 في 'نيو انغلاند جورنال أوف ميديسن' أن مكملات كربونات الكالسيوم تؤدي إلى انخفاض معدل حدوث الأورام الحميدة في القولون، والتي تعد مقدمة لحدوث سرطان القولون.
حمض الفوليكهو أحد فيتامينات 'ب' الهامة، وقد نشرت مجلة 'التغذية' دراسة عام 2003تبين الروابط بين هذا الفيتامين وسرطان القولون. يشتهر حمض الفوليك بأهميته أثناء الحمل لنمو الجنين وحمايته من تشوهات الأنبوب العصبي، لكن تبين أيضاً أن المستويات الجيدة من الفيتامين تحمي من سرطان القولون. أفادت نتائج الدراسة أن المستويات المتوسطة من حمض الفوليك أفضل وقاية من أورام القولون، لكن لا يوجد تأكيد علمي للكمية المناسبة للوقاية، لذلك ينصح بالاعتدال.
