حلل الباحثون دور الجين الموجود في المخ ويعرف باسم (SKA2)، وهو مسؤول عن عرقلة الأفكار السلبية من خلال السيطرة على هرمون التوتر "الكورتيزول" ومنعه من الانتشار في جميع أنحاء الدماغ.
وبعد مقارنة أدمغة المرضى الذين يعانون من مرض عقلي وعدد من الأصحاء، وجد الباحثون من جامعة "جون هوبكنز" الأمريكية أن أولئك الذين أقدموا على الانتحار كان مستوى هرمون (SKA2 ) لديهم أقل بكثير من أقرانهم الأصحاء، بحسب صحيفة دايلي ميل البريطانية.
